Remembering General
"Rosie" Grubbs...
"My dad loved the Corps and I can
remember my little brother age 4 or 5, Donald, racing
after them as they marched to retreat at Bolling AFB.
Since he didn't always stay behind and would get inside
the ranks, I don't know how they kept from stepping on
him. They marched to the soft sounds of the beat of the
sticks on the rims of the drums I believe. I was just a
kid at the time but one of the things those days and 5
pm retreats did was instill a respect and love for the
flag and this country and for the drums, pipes and
bugles that I have today. I find it horrific that
military posts/bases no longer stop everything,
including getting out of cars, as the flag is lowered
each day.
My dad died in 1972 at what I
consider a very young man, age 62. He would be proud to
know that he and the Corps are remembered."
